During this year I have not been well, and my hands did not like typing for very long. I have now been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and on proper medication I am feeling better, but my hands still are protesting when I type for very long. This has meant that the Movie Reviews did not get done. Oh yes I kept going to the movies, even when it was difficult to get up out of the seats, my movie going friend Trish has had to help me out of the chair several times...but I learned, go early in the day when my energy was good and therefore I could get myself up. I have loved doing my movie reviews, and I missed doing them.

One day, watching The View, I saw a young man give a review of a play he had just seen via YouTube and thought I could that. So now I have done a few, took me a few times to get the hang of it, and I will endeavor to do them this way, and see how it goes.

This link will take you to my YouTube account and latest movie review The Theory of Everything, plus several others. I'm also inserting the link for you.
Please let me know what you think of this way of doing them and I trust you will enjoy these as much as you have told me you enjoy the written word ones. Email me at norma@normacowie.com
I had heard it was ‘dark’ and controversial. This I’m sure is because the book had been banned from schools and it had taken Jeff Bridges 18 years to bring it to the screen. However long it took him, it was worth it. This is a movie which leaves you ‘thinking’. The theme is people living in a ‘perfect’ community, without emotion. Having no differences or choices and at the age of graduation the young are placed in a ‘job’ chosen for them. One boy, Jonas is placed with an elderly man The Giver, to learn about true pain and pleasure of the ‘real’ world.

Then the fun begins as Jonas, played adeptly by Brenton Thwaites wants to share what he is learning with his friends, mostly with Fiona played by Odeya Rush and Aser, played by Cameron Monahan. Jeff Bridges plays the older man The Giver, while Meryl Streep is Chief Elder, Alexander Skarsgard plays Jonas’s Dad, while Katie Holmes, his mother.

As mentioned this movie is worth seeing only for the conversation about society, and whether not being controlled is better than having all our feelings/emotions. Is it worth having to obey whatever is said by a governing body or not. The story is really about how Jonas is ‘freed’ and thereby ‘frees’ everyone. The result of that freeing we do not know. Is it good news how everything can go from black and white to ‘color’ when emotions are released. Or is it better to live in ignorance in a black and white world. The Giver is a movie which asks this question. An important one. It does make you think about our society and how many of us live.
As usual, Expendables 3 is full of shooting, great stunts, and lots of well known actors. I think that is the part I love the most. Who is going to show up next. You have the usual, Sylvester Stalone, Barney and Jason Statham, Christmas along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Trench, Dolph Lundgren, Gunner Jenson, Randy Couture, Toli Road and Terry Crew as Ceaser, who gets hurt and is only in it in the beginning and very end. Jet Li as Yin Yang from the previous two Expendables shows up near the end.
This time around they added some other well known names Harrison Ford, as Drummer (taking over Bruce Willis’s role) Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes (so glad to see him again, and there is a priceless line near the beginning of the movie which had me laughing really early - if you know the history of Wesley Snipes you will get it. If not, ask me and I will advise you). Kelsey Grammar has a part in helping Barney find the new ‘young’ crew - Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Kellan Lutz, and Ronda Rousey. Each actor plays a contributing part and I enjoyed everyone.

The story line is usual, bad man (Mel Gibson) has to be taken out and the Expendables have to do it. Barney (Stallone) goes after a new team (the young ones) and they get captured and so its up to the old team (yeah - so happy to see them involved) to go save them. Then the ten of them work together to fight the bad guy and an army. Impossible odds, but heh this is the Expendables. Lots of great stunts as previously said, and if you don’t mind the noise of things being blown up then you will enjoy the Expendables once again.

Personally, I enjoyed it. I like love seeing the older actors, they are like a familiar family member. Now I’m attached to the new ones. I do hope they do an Expendables 4 with both teams alive and well once more.
Slowly paced, but not too slow, character and story line building so you come to understand the main characters and their nuances. This is a movie which talks about bravery of leaving what you know to go to the unknown. Of courage of being able to go after what you want and achieve it. And most of all a movie of honoring what is really important to yourself.

Helen Mirren plays Madam Mallory a proprietress of a celebrated French restaurant. Om Puri plays Papa, the head of the Indian family who opens an Indian restaurant right across the street from Madam Mallory. Tmanish Dayal plays Hassan, the son who is a gifted chef, who trains under Madam Mallory and Charlotte LeBon plays the beautiful Marguerite. These characters form the square upon which the movie is built upon. Oh yes there are others, but the dynamics between these four is what makes this movie work.

You may wonder why you would want to see a movie about French and Indian food, but it is really a movie about relationships, around food. I said to myself at the end ‘delightful’ and it is. A delightful movie, reminding us of hope, achievement of goals is possible and underneath everything love.
We have been watching the advertising for it for quite a while and we were waiting for this movie to be here.

First of all, I enjoyed it. It was different from the other Marvel comic movies though. It was humours, not sure if it was meant to be, but the writing sure made it like that. The comments between each of the 'stars' had you laughing. I also felt it was very much for teenagers, as it was not overly deep and certainly not intense, although I'm sure it was supposed to be tense. I did not feel it like that.

Other interesting bits was the different colored skin. Zoe Saldana, as Gamora, the assassin skin color is Green, but there were lots of people around with pink skin, blue skin, black skin, you name it people seemed to have it. I found that concept interesting - skin color coming from different planets in the universe with people living, marrying (there is one scene with a white man, pink woman and their pink little girl) getting along. Yeah for acceptances of differences!

Chris Pratt is excellent as Peter Quill, Star Lord. He had just enough sass, fun and yet determination about him to be the unherald leader of the group. Zoe Saldana was great as usual in her action role.
Bradley Cooper's voice (was that really Bradley Cooper's voice) as Rocket the angry raccoon. Mind you he gives the most laughs and is the hero of the hour (after Star Lord). Vin Diesel as Groot, the tree man who basically says only the same three words manages, thanks to the magic of computers has some wonderful expressions. Apparently, he had to record "I AM GROOT" over 1,000 times to get the 'right' intonation. And finally, to round out the five, Dave Bautista who plays Drax, what a make up, or transfer job he had on him. Took me awhile to 'get' him during the movie, but in the end I found him acceptable (I can't say adorable - but he showed his softer side).

Worth going to see. Well its not a movie I would say you have to see, but its well done, has a sci-fi story-line and definitely has action. You go from one action scene to anther with a little of non action in between. I enjoyed the ease of this movie, not over intense, yet lots of action, explosions and of course the destructive of a city in the end. In a hot summer day, in a cool movie house, yes worth seeing, and know I will go see the next one, which has already been ordered up. Perhaps we will get to find out who Star Lord's Father is.
They had a 2D showing at 4pm, it was a very hot day, so what better time than to visit the movie theatre.

The question often asked of me when I see a movie is "Did you enjoy it?". I can't say I enjoyed it, but I am glad I saw it. Andy Serkis as Caesar is phenomenal, and Jason Clarke as Malcolm I thought played his part well. Of course Gary Oldman gave his usual stellar performance in his role as Dreyfus.

So what did I come away with. A few things. Near the beginning of the movie, the humans make the comment amongst themselves stating they want their lives to go "back to the way it was". This struck me as absolutely silly. You don't go backwards, you go forward. It was the wanting to get a hydro-dam back working that had the humans getting into contact with the Apes.

Then the following: fear and guns are not good together. Hatred, especially bottled up hatred, distorts and creates all sorts of problems. Rejecting anything which is different from oneself can lead to misunderstanding and therefore problems. You could say this is a anti-gun movie. As it is guns which begin the problem and keep on creating the problem.

You have two different groups, with some of them really wanting peace between them, while others either filled with fear, hatred and do not understand differences escalate the problems. I would not recommend that this is a movie you 'have' to see. But all the Apes were done wonderfully, the directing, editing etc, was done well. But I left thinking "how sad we cannot respect differences and listen to each other". And is that not happening in our world right now. Perhaps we truly need to learn to respect and honor each other once again. I will await the next sequel and see what they do with that.
I give this movie 3 out of 5.

Norma Cowiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10491675245071561341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3852684691335768902.post-44716217548044734292014-07-27T18:14:00.000-07:002014-07-27T18:14:47.916-07:00Hercules - movie reviewSetting off to see Hercules I did not have any expectations of what I was going to see. If there were any, they weren't very high. I was pleasantly surprised. Should have realized Dwayne Johnson was not going to be in something which did not have some substance. Plus Brett Ratner as director usually spins a good, tight story. This they did.

At the end of the movie, I turned to my movie companion Trish and "I enjoyed that". This movie has all what you expect in a myth tale. It contains great stunts, and you did not feel you were watching generated ones, you thought you were watching real people doing them. A story line of betrayal and heroism. The good guys definitely win, when you think they may lose. Of course the hero has to come out on top. Hercules and his group of friends save the day in more ways than one.

The line up of actors supporting Dwayne Johnson was good. John Hurt as Lord Cotys, always plays a bad guy well. Ian McShane as Amphiaraus was great as the 'seer' of the bunch. He supplies the most humor with his comments. Rufus Sewll as Autolycus (I always love his eyes) as Hercules's longest friend. Reece Ritchie who plays Iolaus, Hercules's nephew - the constant story teller gives a sense of humanity to the story.

If you like adventure, if you like good stunts, if you like a myth coming alive then you will enjoy this movie. I did. Oh yes, Dwayne Johnson must have worked out considerably to get his muscles to be that big!!!! Forget Arnold is his day, Dwayne wins!
4 out of 5 for entertainment.Norma Cowiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10491675245071561341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3852684691335768902.post-90779806940444777322014-07-26T18:38:00.001-07:002014-07-26T18:38:47.610-07:00Lucy - movie reviewFirst of all thank you to all of you who have requested that I get back to doing my movie reviews, and that you missed them. Thankfully, I'm feeling much better now and my hands can type effectively for a longer period of time. So I'm back!

Just home from seeing the movie Lucy. I thought I was going to see an action movie, with quite a bit of 'killing' in it. Well, yes, there was killing, but the hidden story, of our human mind potential was PHENOMENAL. I think everyone should see this movie, if only for the information it imparts.
The main character Lucy is played by Scarlett Johansson, and if there was any doubt that she can act, then this role dispels that. She was brilliant in this role. She ends up being coerced into being a 'mule' for an Asian cartel, when the substance she has been implanted with begins leaking which expands her mind. Then the fun begins.
Due to Lucy's brain being developed more than the usual 10% it is often said that we use, she began to use more and more brain power at one time. So the action, often taking place with her mind power in command, is intersected with wonderful visuals of nature, or of Morgan Freeman lecturing on the function of the brain. It is these inserts which make this movie totally worth while.

Nothing like great acting, and then more importantly, the storyline, written and directed by Luc Besson, to educate us into realizing we are more than acquiring things and going for power. All of us interested in humanity and its growth realize we need to move beyond the smaller thinking, and this movie gives us a glimpse at what it might be like with a 'mind' at full potential. Whether that would be how it is truly like, who knows, but it certainly makes you think.
I give this 4 1/2 out of 5. Worth seeing for sure if you are interested in philosophy, the evolution of human kind and the potential we all know we have.

But Sunday afternoon came with nothing really to do, so off I trot through the snow falling to see 3 Days to Kill.

What a surprise. There was a part of me that thought this might be misnamed and I think I was right, but I'm not sure what I would have called it. Yes, there was killing, but it was FUNNY. I laughed so much through this movie, between people being shot dead, which in itself, shame to say was also funny for the most part.

Some scenes are not pleasant to look at, but so many were. The Writer Adi Hasak (and others) did a great job of catching the comedic relief to the tension. The idea of this man who is dying spending time with his daughter, who is in total teenage rebellion, and who actually says to him "We have 3 days to Kill". And kill it they do.

Yes people die, but by killing the bad guys the good guy, Kevin Costner does super great as the old, dried up CIA agent who is dying is given an experimental drug and is saved. Hailee Steinfeld does great as the teenage daughter, who Ethan, Kevin Costner's character has not seen since she was little. She's mad, she's hurt, she's a 'teenager'. Connie Nielsen plays Ethan's wife (they are not divorced) but its Amber Heard as Vivi the person who hires him to get the really bad guy who has nuclear weapons in a suitcase no less who is dramatic. This movie is well casted. I never once thought, wrong person for this part, even right down to the smallest role.

I love plot twists, especially when I figure them out before hand, and I figured this one out. Yes I knew they were all going to end up at the 'party' at the end and the resulting 'get the bad guy' ending.

No matter if there were killings, no matter what...chasing on a purple girls bicycle. I laughed. The juxtaposition of daughter vs the job was well written, well executed and everyone laughed. To see a different type of killing movie, then this is it. 3 Days to Kill is enjoyable - surprisingly.
It is not often you go see a movie knowing everyone dies, and honestly I was interested in seeing how it was handled and how it would be done.

I enjoyed it. The writers, Janet Scott Batchler (and others) did a great job in weaving the historical event into a love story contaminated with greed and power of the times. I loved the short history lesson of how the Romans in Britain destroyed villages etc. Watching the scene at the beginning of the movie when the main character Milo's father gets killed, and I had the thought 'power corrupts', as the Roman in charge, Kiefer Sutherland's character, Corvus, who of course shows up later as an adversary - still in charge, still in power. The first scenes really set the stage, how this young lad Milo escapes the massacre and becomes a slave and later a gladiator.

As a great gladiator he is taken from London, England, to Pompeii, Italy. I loved watching the map unfold as they show is journey through the countries. I think I do love looking at old maps, and noticing how the boundary lines of these countries are nothing like they are today, and wondering what they will look like 100 years from now.

Anyhow, Milo gets to help a lady, Cassia played by Emily Browning, with her horse. And the love story between the slave gladiator and the lady begins. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the fellow slave gladiator Atticus who was to fight for his freedom and becomes Milo's friend plays an important role in the story too.

Mainly this is a love story (yes I shed a few tears at the end) which is going to end in disaster as the volcano erupts and Milo struggles to help save Cassia with the help of Atticus. I think it is well done, not the greatest ever, but worth seeing. Those times were hard on the poor, the slaves, as the powerful had power. The higher in rank the more power you had. It reminds that a mean person, whether rich or poor is still a mean person, while a gentle, loving person is a gentle loving person whether rich or poor. We must always remember that and not brand people because they are in a powerful or not powerful position.

Thinking back what did I like the best, truly how the fighting combination of Atticus and Milo bet out the Roman soldiers. How I respond when the underdog beats the odds. But, the heart strings at the love story was wonderful and made the story believable and workable. The last scenes were definitely well done. This movie combined technology and realism very well.

3 1/4 out of 5. At the time they originally came out I remember enjoying them, though now I was amazed at how 'cheesy' they were. Not so the new Robo Cop.

This new Robo Cop is totally updated, the usual story, a cop who is badly injured is made into a Robo Cop by having the majority of him changed into a robot, a machine, which is computer driven. In fact there is one scene where you get to see him, his brain (altered with wires etc), his face, his heart and lungs and his right hand. The rest of him is a machine. It was quite a sight which left one a bit reeling.

The technology which is now in place since the originals were made was truly evident. The pace, the impact of the interactions plus the sets get and keeps one engaged with the process. The actors all did their jobs very adequately. It was not hard to 'like' and 'feel' for Joel Kinnaman who played Alex Murphy/Robo Cop. Gary Oldman as Dr. Dennett Norton, who had a heart and in the end helps Alex remain himself, Michael Keaton as the corrupt business man Raymond Sellars who only sees the money angle and not the human angle.

I enjoyed this movie. I found the pace was just right, I came away feeling like I can't wait for the next Robo Cop movie. Joel Kinnaman made the Robo Cop believable. You were rooting for him to come out on top. You want him and his family to win. A good remake.

For an interesting adventure. Worth seeing.
Whoever did the casting in Winter's Tale, knew something that most didn't. If you want to see one movie which depicts a love story which totally embraces love, time travel, and mythology, then this is it.

What a beautiful story. A thief (Colin Farrell) who has a fight on his hand with an old nemeses (a demon played aptly by Russell Crowe) has a beautiful white horse come into his life (Pegasus) and while he burglars a particular house falls for a girl who is dying. She eventually dies in his arms, but not before the most wonderful love scenes of sincerity and joy have taken place. Plus lots of philosophy of life.

Then his nemeses sees him dead, except somehow he arrives not knowing who he is in our time. Here he encounters another person (Jennifer Connelly) who has a daughter who is dying from cancer. It is how this story unfolds and how although he thought he was supposed to save the original red haired girl, it turns out he can save the young red haired girl instead. He also gets to destroy the demon, and flies away on Pegasus. Sounds a bit much, but really it is beautifully done. Akiva Goldsman who co-wrote and directed this movie has done a wonderful job of bringing a sensitive, hard to put into movie form story. I believe he did it. (I know many critics say it didn't). But as I sat there with tears in my eyes (at the end) I was so glad I saw it and so did my friends who were there with me.

This is a beautiful love story, soft, gentle and leaves you with the feeling that love is real. Enjoy all of life fully while you can. Go see this beautiful story. The settings are wonderful. Especially those set back in time. Oh yes, can't not mention Will Smith who has a small role as the 'Judge', (the Devil). As usual he is great!. Plus Eva Marie Saint has a small role. Great to see her also. A Winter's Tale, is definitely a winter winner!
I had wanted to see it and to ensure I got to see it before it disappeared in we went and once again we were not disappointed. I must make a parallel here. We came out of the light yet very insightful movie of Saving Mr. Banks to come into the relatively heavy movie of the Book Thief, they could not be as far apart on the spectrum of entertainment. Yet the similarities were there. Both dealt with the past influencing the present. Both dealt with loss, forgiveness and understanding. It was quite a night for Trish and myself. As we drove back home (we had gone north to see these two movies) we discussed them - something we don't always do. But both movies had an impact. Now onto The Book Thief.

World War II movies are not very popular, especially when the main character is about the German side of things, yet this human story is so touching of a young girl who is taken to live with strangers. She learns to read and loves books. In her love of books she steals 'borrows' them, memorizes them and either reads them to the young Jewish man the family is hiding, or recites them to others while in the bomb shelter.

This is a story which is not for the faint of heart, but wonderfully told and portrayed by the main characters. Lisiel played by Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush who plays her Papa and Emily Watson her plays her Mama. Ben Schnetzer plays Max the young Jewish man. Her young male friend Rudy is played apply by Nico Liersch.

Death plays a part in this movie, in fact is narrated by Death. What a perspective, and because it is death, perspectives are looked at which one may not necessarily consider. I was concerned during the movie that all my questions would not get answered. What happens to this one, what happens to that one, and guess what they all get answered. Thank goodness. It also shows the caliber of the movie that one is so involved you want to know what happens to them. Leave no end dangling.

I have not read the book, but a friend tells me it is excellent, and that I can believe, in fact, I may just have to read it because the movie is so impactful on how impactful war is no matter what side you are on.
I laughed, I cried I felt for P.L. Travers as an adult, adored her as a child played by Annie Rose Buckley. This story of how the movie Mary Poppins got made is one which gives the audience much more than just a 'story'. It is powerful.

Mr. Walt Disney pursued the film rights of this movie for 20 years. It was only when P.L. Travers is stretched financially that she agrees to meet with Mr. Disney. But she has her own idea of how the movie should be represented. Fireworks, misunderstandings you name it. In the meantime, you laugh, you cry and you fall in love. You fall in love with the story of Mr. Banks.

The film is wonderfully edited by Mark Livolsi. Much credit goes to him in how he inserted the story of the young girl 'Ginty', who grows up to become P.L. Travers. Colin Farrell is brilliant as her father, and as I really want you to see this movie I'm not saying anything more about the story of her Dad.

Needless to say Tom Hanks - he just keeps on getting better and Emma Thompson, both are brilliant. The support cast held up their roles wonderfully well too. Coming out of this movie after crying my eyes out which shows this is a woman's movie, I was so glad I had seen it. It has a most wonderful section on forgiveness - one of my own topics. How great to hear about it in a big budget movie.

It also shows the impact on how we grow up and the effect into our current lives. Something I work with daily with my clients. Yes, this movie is one I could suggest anyone watch who wants to learn something about how the past affects the future. Saving Mr. Banks could help you saving yourself!
I just love movies based on true stories and although I know often creative license is taken, this movie, Philomena took me on a journey where sadness, joy and pain were all intermingled.

Dame Judi Dench plays Philomenia who initiates a search with the help of a unemployed political journalist, Martin Sixsmith, played by Steven Coogan, to find her son, who was taken away from her 50 years previously. The story of the Catholic Church and their practices in Ireland all those years ago comes under scrutiny. Plus how the journey unfolds as they learn the church sold him to a couple in the U.S.

I loved the way the editor, Valerio Bonelli, fitted in pictures of the boy as he was growing up, which helped make him real as they were unfolding the story of his life.

The humanness played by Judi Dench and how Steven Coogan begins not wanting to do this story at all, but gets emotionally involved with the story and aids Philomenia in unraveling the story utilizing his journalistic skills.

Worth seeing - definitely. Take Kleenexes, as the ending will get to you I'm sure - it did me.
This is the most interesting movie, reminding me of the story of "The Old Man and the Sea". Written and directed by J.C. Chandor - what a job!

There are hardly any words spoken, maybe six in the whole movie. There is only Robert Redford, a boat, a life raft, a cargo boat and a the sea, always the sea in its many moods.

The story is after a collision with a shipping container at sea a resourceful, older sailor finds himself, despite all his knowledge, efforts and ingenuity finds himself staring his death in the face.

This movie could have been boring, no words, one actor, but it wasn't. It was the most powerful movie and although I'm sure it is not going to be open to a lot of distribution, if you have a chance of seeing it. Do so....it is excellent. I think I went through every emotion I have, plus some more.
Definitely put it on your DVD list.....

Remember the name, All is Lost starring Robert Redford, who is magnificent.

First of all for some reason, I do not enjoy the Hobbit series as much as I did The Lord of the Rings. After saying that, I saw this in 3D and thought it was one of the best 3D movies I had seen, and if you have the choice, then choose 3D, the background, the Orc detail is magnificent.

There is no doubt that Director Peter Jackson, has woven his magic as he brings middle earth alive once again and his cast of Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Richard Armitage as Thorn do their roles justice, although I thoroughly wanted to see more of Aidan Turner who plays Kili. No wonder Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel is drawn to him. Her role was created so that a woman's presence could be seen in a male-driven cast. I thought she was spectacular!!!

I also enjoyed seeing Orlando Bloom as Legolas once again. To me the movie lights up when he and Evangeline Lilly appear. Then there is the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Dragon. That is wonderful to hear.

All in all, you need to travel the journey of the Hobbit, - concentrating on the dwarves - most of which I find uninteresting -- oh well. I know I will be there when the last installment is released next year, if only to see a few of the characters I love, and the scenery which is great and the wonderful sets. Plus as I have never read the book (although I attempted to several times) I want to see the end.
3 1/2 out of 5. (Most of my friends who have seen it enjoyed it to at least a 4 to 4 1/2 -- unfortunately for me the dwarves don't inspire me).
As a former DEA undercover agent, he moves to a 'quiet' town to raise his daughter. Of course it is not 'quiet' at all James Franco is there as the drug dealer.
When Jason's character's daughter upsets Cassie Bodine Klum, played by Kate Bosworth, she sets her drug lord brother on him and the fun begins. First I must say I did not recognize Kate Bosworth until the credits rolled at the end. So thin!!! Then I did not recognize Winona Ryder, playing James Franco's character's girlfriend, she looked great! Therefore, great actors who I did not recognize until the credits.

Isabela Vidovic who plays Maddy Broker, Jason's daughter does an admirable job as being able to take care of herself, and yet frightened when need be. Another young actress who I'm sure will be 'working' a lot.

Although this movie has the usual Jason Statham's action it also has a warmer side of him, (perhaps not as much as some actors, but acceptable.). Do you need to see this movie - no, but if you love Jason Statham, or like the gender, then yes, he is at his best. He has enough warmth to be the widowed father, he of course won't take anything from anyone...I said at the end "well that definitely got rid of any built up aggression I may have had". My adrenaline was pumping.

I was surprised to see that Sylvester Stallone wrote this movie, and I have read it was originally designed to be part of his Rambo series. Not overly deep, but entertaining. Think of an older Rambo with a kid, but with Jason Statham playing the role. Quiet, deep, but taking no guff from nobody.

3 out of 5. (only if you like people being beat up and have your adrenaline going).Norma Cowiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10491675245071561341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3852684691335768902.post-65900329834875477302013-11-29T10:44:00.000-08:002013-11-29T10:44:09.431-08:00The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - movie reviewWhen I was reading the three Hunger Games books, I did not enjoy the middle (second) book. In fact I remember thinking, I don't know if I want to see the movie of this book. Yet, there I was purchasing my ticket to catch The Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie. I was surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. In fact, I do want to see it again, as the action scenes have so much in them, you cannot possibly see it all the first time. I think my imagination was worse than what was shown in the movie.

Once again Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson, go into the games. This time though the odds are really stacked against them, once again, through to many twists of the plot, they are still surviving at the end. Once again great acting especially in the last scene by Jennifer Lawrence.

The supporting cast, which has some great actors, Donald Sutherland, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. This movie held my attention from beginning to end.

This is a movie you can pick up without ever seeing the first movie, but it does help to know the story line. I loved the clothes, the images of the fire coming up around their clothing while in the chariot being presented in the arena. And the fighting scenes, well I've already mentioned those. I enjoyed the movie much more than the book. The book left me depressed (often the middle book is the 'dark one' only to be redeemed in the third - think Star Wars).

Director Francis Lawrence did a great job I'm sure with the editing (which I feel breaks or makes a movie). We now have to wait another year for the next installment, and another year after that for the final installment. Thank goodness time go fast. In the meantime, I will go see this movie at least once more.
To my surprise I enjoyed it. Vince Vaughn, who I often find over talks in his roles, was great in this role as the man who has unbeknown to him fathered over 500 children. In the movie you discover why he donated so much sperm.

It is touching, funny and a statement about relationships. Father/son; Boyfriend/girlfriend and family. How when the 142 of them, who are contesting in course to find out who their father 'Starbuck' really is, he says, you have found each other. Family....that is the hidden message behind this.

Vince Vaughn is good in this role, Chris Pratt as his friend creates some laughs and Cobie Smulders playing his pregnant girlfriend, all give their roles justice. Writer/Director Ken Scott should be proud of this. A great combination of comedy with emotion of a serious subject.

Not much to really say except, for a movie which brought a tear to my eye, lots of laughs and a couple of hours well spent. Go see it.
Well treat may not be the word, but my oh my, what a movie. The acting of Chiwetel Ejiofor, is definitely an Oscar winning performance, with everyone involved, and to mention a few Michael Fassbender (phenomenal performance as the slave owner you love to hate) and with Benedict Cumberbatch, (making another movie appearance this year) as a more benevolent slave owner.
This movie, with graphic demonstrations of the cruelty that went on in the south with some slave owners. It is a hard movie to watch at time, and I came away with the thought of "how can we do this to another human being", and as my friend pointed out "they did not think they were human". Thank goodness we are past that. But we still have on our planet inhumanity acts being done to another human. My respect of one another was certainly brought to the fore. Time to realize no matter the color of a person's skin, or the religion he follows, he is still human.
This is a story of a black man, a wealthy black man, who was respected and had a 'position' in his community and how he was lured to Washington, D.C. and then kidnapped and for 12 years until a kindly builder, played by Brad Pitt, (who was also on the production side) let his family and friends in the North know of his plight and he was rescued. Apparently many people found themselves with this fate. Never to be rescued, but to live their lives out in slavery, after being free men.
But Solomon was rescued and returned to his family, and although he learn from the transcript at the end, he tried to sue the people who kidnapped him and the person who beat him until he would admit he was a slave, only to met defeat, he did write a book 12 Years a Slave.
This movie is impactful on so many levels, with great acting and editing, which means great direction by Steve McQueen (oh by the way. The audience was so stunned, they did not move to leave as the credits rolled and when the name Steve McQueen came up a man behind me said 'he's dead'. I think the whole audience had a response to the name Steve McQueen. He did a great job here, bringing out the 'dark side' of the actors so you believed them.
This is a movie everyone needs to see to remind us of a part of world history where we did not respect one another. It is bound to solicit an emotional response, especially with some scenes, so this movie is not for the faint of heart. Still worth seeing.
Slow paced, yet impactful About Time is the movie to see. Tim, Domhnall Gleeson, learns at the age of 21 hat he can travel in time and change what has happened (how we wish). As he experiments with the girl of his dream Rachel McAdams he learns the pifalls of interfering with time.
This is a delightful movie, with a delightful message of enjoy everyday fully. As is often said, 'be present' or 'be in the moment'.
Although not a big budget movie, with Bill Nighy as Tim's Dad and Lydia Wilson as Kit Kat the sister, the support cast all play their parts well.
Enjoy the gentle, easy movie and the wonderful lesson it states.
All the shots that I thought would be great in 3D were, plus more. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, in fact I may have enjoyed it more than the first. Chris Hemsworth at this best, Natalie Portman doing her wonderful work and the absolutely wonderful Loki played by Tom Hiddleston. Even the support cast of Stellan Skarsgard, as the mad scientist, Anthony Hopkins, as the Thor's father, Kat Dennings as the side kick and Christopher Eccleston as the bad guy Malekith.
In fact, everyone played their part great and I feel in love with Zachary Levi. (Loved him in Chuck too).
The story plot of a dark energy (wonderfully red) is unleased into Jane Foster (Portman). Thor comes to save the day with personal sacrifices along the way. Where would Thor be without Tom Hiddleston as the devious Loki. This story has some shifts and changes and its a 'ride'.
In seeing this film two times within a few days of each other, I honestly could go see it again. The detail, the story line with its twists and turns, the magnificent sets as you visit other planets.
Worth seeing, most definitely, entertainment with great acting, wonderful bodies and how friendship, love and even brotherly competition can unfold. It has enough explosions, fighting and flying through the air for those who want to see that to be more than satisfied. Also has enough human relationship interactions for those who love that.
Oh yes, make sure you don't leave the theatre until the last credit is played....you will not be disappointed. (Remember last credit - stay sitting)
I most certainly did. Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline play four older buddies who have been friends since they were six and now have very different lives. They all go to Las Vegas for the wedding of Michael Douglas's character. I must say I enjoyed seeing Kevin Kline as I had not seen him recently and I've always been a fan!

The laughs come a lot. Mary Steenburgen plays the woman of the group, and I won't say the ending, but if you want to laugh, and relate to what they laughter is about then go see this funny movie.
My friend who came with me, said as we went in, I'm tired of seeing movies about older people and its not funny. At the end she said, "I enjoyed that". I did also.

Everyone needs to laugh and the antics each one of these characters get into is great. Dan Fogelman as the writer really needs applause, as this could have been ridiculous, as many of the movies my friend was talking about are. But it is not, it is very real, and has a great message. Live each day!

I also have to mention the Director, Jon Turteltaub, who has directed some great movies which I have enjoyed, and he manages to bring out the characters so well.

The cast has been well casted, as even the support players did their roles proud, Romany Malco as the person who takes care of them at their Hotel (that's another story line) and Jerry Ferrara who plays the young person who fetches and carries (that's another story line).

This movie is full of inner story lines (after all you have four men all with their own agendas) and each one is presented funny.

If you love to laugh, and don't mind laughing at the older spectrum of things, then this movie is a must.
3 1/2 out of 5. (4 for laughs).
Yesterday I went to see it in this first screening of the day. I was not disappointed.
What surprised me was how close to the book it was - reminding me of Harry Potter movies who kept close to the book outline. A few things were changed and some of the threads left out made sense. Therefore my first recommendation is read the book, Ender's Game supposedly written for children, but truly I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The story of how children and tested and if pass, taken to 'battle school' and then onto 'command school'. These are children, who because of their fast abilities in thinking (via video games no less) are able to work together in order to overcome a race of 'insect' beings who came to earth and killed many people. Now Earth is taking the fight to them.
The story evolves around the main character, Ender Wiggin, played by Asa Butterfield, a wonderful young English actor, who was able to become Ender as he worked his way through the 'game'. I found knowing the book helped fill in quite a bit, even though the movie definitely stood on its own.
Harrison Ford plays Colonel Graff, his mentor who is with him the whole way. Hailee Steineld plays Petra, one of his fellow students as does Aramis Knight, who is cast as Bean. Ben Kingsley shows up as the last war hero, as Ender's teacher, with a full Maori Moko, as a New Zealander, I was disappointed with the South African accent coming from a supposedly a New Zealander. Guess they did not know the difference of accents.
I always ask myself, is the movie worth seeing? The answer here is yes...especially if you have read the book. Also second thing I ask myself, what was the message, and here it is about war and annihilating a race of people, just because you don't speak the same language. The subtle under story is. Listen, find a way to communicate with the enemy, just because they don't speak your language does not mean they cannot communicate with you. Also, is it worth destroying (in the movies these young children) just to create the end. In other words, does the end justify the means.
Have a few hours to go and enjoy a 'different' movie, then go see this, its different in lots of ways.
4 out of 5.
